# Generative drops

A generative drop is a collection where every mint creates a new token from your code. You upload your artwork once, and each token gets its own seed. Modularium renders a preview image for each token and stores its metadata on-chain. The token's `animation_url` loads your artwork live with that token's seed.

Go to [`/create/generative`](https://sepolia.modularium.art/create/generative), or follow **Create a generative drop** on [`/create`](https://sepolia.modularium.art/create). One transaction deploys the collection, opens its public mint and claims its slug.

## Fields

| Field | Notes |
| --- | --- |
| Collection Name | Required. |
| Slug | Optional. Defaults to the name, e.g. `/collection/my-collection`. |
| Collection Description | Shown on the collection page, and used as every token's description unless you set one. |
| Collection Image | Shown on the collection page. |
| Artwork | A folder or `.zip` with `index.html` at its root, or a single `.html` file. See [Artwork](#artwork). |
| Preview Aspect Ratio | Shape of the rendered preview image, which is 1000px on its longer side. |
| Token Name | Defaults to `<collection name> #{id}`. `{id}` becomes the token number. |
| Token Description | Defaults to the collection description. |
| Max Supply | Enforced by the contract. Tick **Unlimited** for an open edition. |
| Mint Price | Price per token in the chain's native currency, or **Free**. |
| Max Per Wallet | Optional cap per minting wallet. |
| Mint Start / Mint End | Optional. By default the mint opens immediately and never ends. |
| Allowlist | Optional. Click **+ ADD ALLOWLIST** and paste the wallets that may mint; only they can, from the collection page. See [Allowlists](/create/selling#allowlists). |
| Royalties | Paid to your wallet on secondary sales. |

:::warning
The artwork, aspect ratio and max supply lock when the first token is minted, so collectors always get the work they paid for. Preview it with a few seeds before you create the drop.

## Minting and fees

Collectors mint from the collection page. Each mint pays the mint price plus a small per-token **render fee**, which covers rendering the token and storing its metadata on-chain. The create page and the mint button both show the current fee. Free drops still pay the render fee.

The mint price is split like any other [public mint](/create/selling#where-the-money-goes): the platform fee comes out of the price, and the rest goes to you. The render fee goes to Modularium.

## After a token is minted

1. Right away, the token shows a **\[RENDERING]** placeholder image, its token name and its description. Marketplaces that read the token's metadata show the same placeholder.
2. Within a few minutes, Modularium loads your artwork with the token's seed, captures the first `<canvas>` as the preview image and reads the name, description and attributes your code set. The token is updated on-chain with the image and attributes, plus a name or description if your code set one.
3. From then on, `animation_url` points at your artwork with the token's seed, so marketplaces that support it show the live piece.

If a render fails, it's retried.

## Artwork

Click **UPLOAD** to pick a folder with `index.html` at its root, or drop a folder, a `.zip` of one, or a single `.html` file onto the box. Scripts, libraries, fonts and images in the folder load with relative paths (`<script src="js/sketch.js">`). Everything is pinned to IPFS as one folder, up to 50MB and 1,000 files. Dotfiles and `__MACOSX` are skipped, and a single folder wrapping everything is unwrapped.

Modularium adds `mod.js` (the [`$mod` API](/generative/api)) to your `index.html` when you upload it, so a `<script src="mod.js">` tag is replaced by the pinned copy. If the artwork bundles or inlines its own copy anyway, the pinned one still runs first and the other is ignored.

To write the artwork, start with [Make a generative artwork](/generative/guide) and the [templates](/generative/templates). Try it with different seeds in the [artwork tester](https://sepolia.modularium.art/create/generative/test) before you create the drop.
